EEG Talks Live Event Captioning at SVG Sports Summit

David Weiss

Sports Video Group’s annual SVG Summit once again proved to be an informative way to cap off the year, and EEG was in attendance. Highlights for SVG Summit 2016 included a keynote speech from NBA commissioner Adam Silver, who spoke on the topic of “Technology: Bringing Fans Closer to the Game,” plus a live streaming keynote by Eric Black, CTO of NBC Sports Digital on “NBC Olympics at Rio.”

Bill McLaughlin, EEG’s VP of product development, was invited to participate in the panel, “Venue Initiative White Paper Presentation: In-Venue Closed Captioning.” During the session, panelists shed new light on the choices that sports organizations must make in order to provide quality live closed captioning content in-venue for the hearing-impaired.

In-depth topics that were covered included:

  • What are the current regulations?
  • Technical infrastructure requirements
  • Examples of quality in-venue captioning workflows in several professional and collegiate team stadiums

McLaughlin appeared with fellow panelists Tony Kuck, Product Manager, Live Event Control Systems for Daktronics; and Patti White, President of Good Sport Captioning. The session was moderated by Rick Price of SVG’s Venue Initiative Committee.

A soon-to-be-released white paper by Mr. Price (with contributions from McLaughlin and other industry professionals), will provide a thorough roadmap for successfully implementing a quality captioning workflow in the modern live sports venue. Watch the EEG Blog for notification of its availability.
