Alta™: Software Caption Encoder for Live IP Video

Alta is the answer for any broadcaster planning closed captioning / subtitling in IP video production environments. The virtualized technology connects these modern workflows to the iCap Network - making live captioning/subtitling a seamless and natural part of your programming. Alta powers your application through iCap, providing 24/7 connectivity to captioners, Lexi and Smart Lexi. Additionally, SCTE-35 Regionalization and Ad Triggering Digital Program Insertion cues can be both injected into transport streams as well as fully read and analyzed. Supports USA / EU / UK captioning and subtitling standards.

Alta Offers Broadcasters:

Two Product Modes - Each VM is configured for processing either MPEG Transport Streams or SMPTE 2110 uncompressed IP video. The SMPTE 2110 Alta VM supports PTP, NMOS IS-04 and IS-05 Connection Management, and the JT-NM TR-1001 "Full Stack" specification. The MPEG Transport Stream version includes support for transport streams over UDP, RTP, SMPTE 2022 RTP-FEC, or SRT.

Seamless Transitioning - With Alta, modern IP and legacy SDI workflows are unified under the same iCap Cloud - allowing a seamless transition from hardware-driven caption insertion.

Flexible Deployment - Deployed as a standalone virtual machine on VirtualBox, Cisco, or Microsoft Controllers. The technology is also available as a software library for custom integration.

Software-Driven Control - Controlled through a web browser interface or via scripting automation tools.

SCTE-35 Insertion Component - A licensed add-on for injecting SCTE-35 program insertion cues directly into MPEG transport streams (trigger with any commercial or custom trigger management software using the SCTE-104 protocol standard over the network).

SCTE-35 Full Decoding and Logging - Don't miss valuable ad opportunities! All SCTE-35 triggers from incoming streams are timestamped and logged to disk for future inspection, with a complete message parser and API access to the raw data.

*The SCTE-35 broadcast standard allow broadcasters to place real-time messages into their video stream with a wide range of essential signals for distributors, including when to insert local advertisements into programming, archiving/repurposing restrictions, and indexing information.

JT-NM Tested - A solution for native SMPTE 2110 IP production workflows, Alta offers interoperability between other equipment in the SMPTE ST 2110 technology stack. Alta is JT-NM Tested for 2110-30, 2110-40, and TR-1001.

*The JT-NM Tested program offers prospective purchasers of IP-based equipment greater, more documented insight into how vendor equipment aligns to the SMPTE ST 2110, ST 2059, and AMWA NMOS standards. The Alta IP Video Caption Encoder has received three JT-NM Tested badges.

Closed Captioning / Subtitling Output Standards:

  • ATSC User Data : (USA broadcast) embedded CTA-708 captions in MPEG-2, AVC/H264, or HEVC video streams
  • SMPTE 2038 (RDD-11) : CTA-708 captions in VANC wrapper within a transport stream - for use with any video standard including JPEG2000 mezzanine streams
  • DVB Subtitles : (EU/UK broadcast) ETSI EN 300 743 - broadcast carriage of graphically coded subtitles
  • DVB Teletext : (legacy/supplemental EU/UK broadcast) ETSI EN 300 472 - carriage of Teletext coded data in a configurable page for subtitling
  • DVB TTML : DVB standard carriage of EBU-TT / IMSC Timed Text segments in an MPEG Transport Stream
  • SMPTE 2110-40 : CTA-708 , OP-47 Teletext, and other ancillary data packets in SMPTE 2110, using PTP timing and NMOS IS-05 Connection Management
